In some parts of the west of Ireland, large ancient limestone boulders sit stoically in the landscape. Some are positioned firmly, others balance precariously on fragile limestone pedestals or lodge in a deep clefts (or grykes) in the limestone substrate. These glacial erratics are dotted around the landscape like colonies of ancient pilgrims frozen in time. Some are solitary, others are grouped. Their seeming inertia belies the dramatic geological events which brought them here from faraway continents. Their solid forms gently but insistently diminished by the elemental erosion over millennia. Their presence marking the terrain they inhabit.
