Paula Hickey’s creative practice is inspired by the elemental. Material play lies at the heart of her process. She believes that it is through working with substances that the more elusive aspects of our existence can be explored. Making visible that which might otherwise remain hidden or overlooked.

Fascinated by the way matter manifests itself, its infinite variations, liveliness, and responsiveness, Paula’s process involves an exploration into, and celebration of, this mutability. She mediates encounters between an earthbound palette of traditional and non-traditional materials seeking to capture unique moments of transformation. Traces of these events are recorded on paper, and can be seen as drawings made by nature. 

 

Paula’s aim is to draw the viewer in to contemplate both the material and immaterial aspects of this flow of matter. Her work is concerned with challenging assumptions of fixed solidity and apprehending the condition of our existence as one of continual change.
